Day 2 - July 3, 2010

I received some bad news while I was in Chicago. My son in Afghanistan was injured in a bomb blast. A bomb was detonated underneath a truck he was in. The bomb left a 13' wide by 14' long and 4' deep crater in the road. His truck was thrown 50'.

We have talked to him twice and he is doing okay. He has two broken legs and some lacerations on his head. We understand that one leg is already in a halo, but the other requires more surgery. The extent of damage to his other leg is not clear to us only because we have not talked to a doctor/surgeon. We've only talked to Jake, who is under the influence of pain medication, so not completely with-it, and talked with a couple of liason officers.

While this is distressing, we feel blessed. Most of the other men in the truck were not as fortunate. One perished, another has a broken back, and another lost his legs.

We believe he will be flown to Walter Reed Hospital on Tuesday, but his travel plans are not definite. Not certain how long he will be there. We may take a day or two to spend with him, but it is hard to say when and how low we might go because we don't know the plan for him yet.

We are fine and in good spirits. We prepared ourselves for the worst case so, as I said, we are feeling blessed that he was protected.
